You know what I forgot was totally awesome? The intro music to The Last Starfighter.

I am seriously considering attending the Fuck Walk: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=149006245170490
I just upgraded my mobile to the Samsung Galaxy S 2. Now I read this: http://srw.io/5 – upgrade totally justified SamsungGetIt
Samsung seem to be doing good things with Android so I think they’ll get my next handset upgrade monies (I appear to be on a 15 month upgrade cycle). Samsung have unlocked bootloaders (and didn’t need to be convince why unlocked bootloaders are good) and probably more importantly they push firmware updates without letting carriers get in the way. Now that last one is a big win. Owning the HTC Desire I saw the complete cluster fuck of carrier controlled firmware first hand (e.g. completely breaking the GPS feature at release [yeah I don’t forget stuff like that Telstra]). Then to add insult to injury the carrier massively delayed every Android release. Consumers are then in an infinite cycle of: Carrier blaming manufacturer … Manufacturer blaming carrier … (then at one point they were both blaming Google, which was just plain bullshit). I for one won’t fund that game again. Until HTC remove carriers from the equation I won’t buy another HTC handset (even if they are now at least confirming they’ll unlock their bootloaders).
Samsung Kies might be a steaming pile of shite and I’d rather see PC-software-less OTA updates (like Google does with the Nexus range) but even still Kies is a damn sight better than carrier controlled upgrades. Trust me.
The only other option at the moment for a good handset is LG, but their hardware really is just a bit “meh” and their flagship handset is still on 2.2. Rumor has it they will be partnering with Google for the next Nexus handset (probably running Ice Cream Sandwich) so hopefully that’ll do for them what the Nexus S did for Samsung. It seems like Google is running around teaching the manufacturers how to pull up their socks and as a consumer and developer I applaud such actions. Very cunning and very cool. Now hurry up and open a Melbourne engineering office :)
Oh great. The mainstream media is going to have a field day with this: http://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2011/pdfs/pr208_E.pdf
I’m quite disappointed with the WHO. There is no proposed cause of action by which radio waves can cause cancer. There are no actual experiments suggesting that radio waves can cause genetic disruption in human tissue. There are many epidemiological studies suggesting that the incidence of cancer has NOT increased with the use of mobile phones. There are two studies that I know of which do not completely rule out the possibility of mobile phones causing cancer and hundreds that conclude otherwise, the IARC is choosing to base their statement on two studies. Of course none of that will be covered by our fear inducing media, I expect the next few days will be a barrage of: OMFG MOBILE PHONES ARE KILLING US!
“Despite being the most prevalent form of primary brain tumor, GBMs occur in only 2–3 cases per 100,000 people in Europe and North America.” (via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glioblastoma_multiforme). Of those cases, a link has already been found to viral infections, and possibly ionizing radiation (i.e. not mobile phones), PVC and lead exposure… doesn’t really leave much room for mobile phones. Quite the epidemic.
Even their own press release says “chance, bias or confounding could not be ruled out with reasonable confidence” which will also be ignored by the fear inducing press machine.
<sigh/>
It’s probably a bad sign that Gmail is starting to tag my UPS alerts as spam, the power must be going off a bit too often.
Oh look, another website for butt-hurt pedants: http://learnyourdamnhomophones.com/

christian: you’re only atheist because you’re mad at god. Me: By that logic you’re only christian because you’re mad at Thor.
